Making This Thanksgiving Count

Posted: May 17, 2019

By Master Christopher Rappold

It’s that time of year again.  A time when we start to reflect on all of the things we have to be grateful for.  Though we know we should count our blessing every day, the truth is it can be easy to get caught up in “the busy” and forget to bring this feeling of gratitude into our daily life.   Thanksgiving for me is one of many placeholders in my calendar year when I am reminded to not just feel gratitude but to express it to those within my circle and also to those not directly connected with me.

Reaching out to people who are not in any way connected to you is a really cool experience if you give it a try.  The best experience is to do something for someone who doesn’t have the ability to help you back.  One of the reasons I love the Turkey Brigade so much is that it focuses on some of the most vulnerable in our communities, people and families who may never be students at one of our schools.  I see everyone’s involvement as a selfless, compassionate and generous act of time and energy.

What else can you do that would provide you or your children the experience of doing something nice for someone?  How about pay for the car behind you when you are in the drive through at Dunkin’ Donuts?  How about reaching out to a non-profit agency with a call just to thank them for the work they do for the community?  How about writing a note to someone whose work tends to go unnoticed to express appreciation for their work?  How about encouraging your child to report a kind act they observe a classmate doing to a teacher?  How about sitting with someone at lunch and keeping the conversation on what they want to talk about?

There are so many creative ways to usher the feeling of gratitude into your life.  Small random acts of kindness are a great way to make it happen.   What a great habit to share with your children as they grow to learn the real meaning of expressing Thanks-giving.
